Adclear: A Narrative That Opened Lloyds-Tier Doors
· Adclear
I came in as consultant and advisor to Adclear almost two years ago, from the earliest stage the company had — before there was a go-to-market motion to speak of, only a product and an ambition to sell it into some of the most conservative buyers in UK financial services.
Adclear is a London RegTech automating financial-promotions compliance with AI, helping regulated firms such as Lloyds Banking Group, PensionBee and Plum cut promotion review times by nearly 90% while staying within FCA rules. The company closed a £2.1m oversubscribed seed round led by Outward VC in November 2025, with angels including ClearScore co-founder Dan Cobley.
None of that changes the physics of the sale. A seed-stage company asking a bank like Lloyds Banking Group to trust it with regulated communications is not a volume problem — it is a credibility problem, decided by a small number of senior, risk-averse people who talk to one another. Get the narrative wrong once, in front of the wrong person, and the account is gone for good.
My job was to build that narrative and protect the founders from the mistakes seed-stage teams make by default: chasing volume, leading with features, and treating a compliance buyer like a growth-stage SaaS buyer. I led the go-to-market narratives from the ground up — what Adclear says, to whom, in what order, and through which door — and sat with the founders on every material conversation until the pattern was theirs, not mine.
Training was the other half of the brief, and I treated it as inseparable from the narrative work rather than a follow-on exercise. I trained the team, founders included, on the sales and marketing judgement behind the narrative — how to read a compliance buyer’s hesitation, when to slow a conversation down rather than push it forward, how to earn the next meeting rather than ask for it. The discipline needed to live with the team, not with me, long after the advisory relationship ended.
Over that engagement, the work helped secure £1M+ in business for a seed-stage company selling into Lloyds-tier institutions — a buying population measured in hundreds, not millions, where trust travels slowly and one bad sequence closes a door for good.
“Alex helped us land major clients in our early stage. He protected us from making obvious mistakes in GTM and trained the team on effective sales and marketing.” — Joe Jordan, Founder, Adclear
Adclear still runs the method. That was always the point.
